Our company members have designed and created three temporary art installations, and developed a short theatre piece to perform in the community. We have used street benches as our inspiration and aim to celebrate them as places of connection and social interaction.
After 11 sessions, we are ready to hit the Kilburn High Road! Catch us across 3 dates, in 2 locations this February.
We hope to see you there. For any further information drop Lucy a line: Lucy@patina-people.com or 07553 474748.
Come with your friends, tell your neighbours, share this with a stranger. Let’s gather together to enjoy free art and theatre and reimagine street benches in our neighbourhoods.
Getting to know the project, getting to know each other. With both drama and art we explored the topic of benches, and connected as a new community group.
Routed in theatre, this week was packed with storytelling, dancing and characters. We got curious about humans, the ways we use benches and fleeting moments of connection.
Our first art session, using different tools, techniques and materials we began transforming cardboard boxes into central installation pieces.
Finishing our box installations, now unrecognisable, cardboard boxes are instead sculptures, social statements, storytelling devices and whimsical entertainment pieces.
Designing the second installation together, akin to advertising agencies, the company pitched ideas in smaller groups to propose a large scale takeover.
Up-cycling fabric into unique and meaningful design. Working with fabric to ultimately dress the benches, we make sure the benches are bright and beautiful!
Continuing with repurposing fabric, material and trims, a tapestry of stories has emerged. As we connect the fabric squares, we celebrate that the three art installations have been created!
Starting the development of the theatre piece, we revisited themes, ideas and motifs that had sprung up in our art sessions. Physical theatre and character building alike has propelled us into devising mode.
New scenes are emerging, we design stage games, and find new messages, voices and themes to platform.
Structuring the games of the show, reordering the scenes and finding the narrative rhythm, we play, refine and rehearse.
A final rehearsal before we hit the streets and deliver our Takeover events next week!
We will see you on the streets of Kilburn!

Hello, I’m Jay. I’m a theatre professional with tons of experience in drama and theatre.
Coming from a small island called Taiwan, rooted in Chinese culture but shaped by a diverse cross-cultural background, I see theatre as a platform to connect with people across the globe. As a director and facilitator in Applied Theatre, I’ve worked with all kinds of people—from kids and teens to adults, older adults, and professionals worldwide. I’ve also performed on both stage and screen, which has deepened my understanding of the art. To me, theatre is a space where anyone, no matter where they’re from, can come together to play and share. I’m looking forward to hearing your voice and stories!
Really hope you can join us. For more info, contact Lucy at: lucy@patina-people.com or 07553 474748.
I'm always happy to chat!
